Always, always trust your gut instinct...

Just wanted to share the news with you all.

B and I went to the doc this morning.

Not the best of news but at least we know what the issue is and I can get treatment.

My gut feel was right!!!

I have a genetic blood disorder that puts me at a very high risk (to be precise a 3 times greater risk) of deep vein thrombosis – clotting. I have the Prothrombin G20210A Gene Mutation. The doctor said I am high risk to fly and need to wear flight socks and take aspirin any time I fly (and make sure I walk around as much as possible through the flight). He said that he has seen many cases of young women flying and then simply dropping dead suddenly due to this condition.

It is also a very real possibility that it has been affecting our ability to conceive so he will be able to treat me for this during our next frozen embryo cycle. The treatment will be a special type of aspirin daily from embryo transfer until 12 weeks pregnancy!!!!!!

It’s a bit of a shock (even though it was what I suspected) and I must say, I just feel so lucky that nothing bad has happened to me so far especially with all the flying I do (and have done) over the years for both work and holidays!

Not only could this piece of info be the key to us conceiving, it could literally save my life.

I won't even begin to get onto the subject of why the freaking hell doctors don't test for this sort of thing as standard!

Interestingly my paternal grandmother has the same thing. Our FS confirmed that it definitely runs in families.

We are very relieved to say that all the other blood tests were clear.

As always, thanks again for all your love and support through this. Here's hoping that our long-held dream of becoming parents will become a reality soon.

  1. I'm so glad you tested for this! Holy crap, it is amazing they don't test for this in everyone and don't make it a test at the travel clinic when you go to get vaccinations or whatever.

I hope the aspirin makes all the difference and your next cycle works!

  4. I am so glad you found out. Going with your gut is always the best way to go. I hate when doctors disregard our feelings.

  7. I am so sorry you have this condition but at least now you have some answers and can proceed with treatment which will make a difference. Take care now!!! when you fly!!
It is amazing how we don't think about family history with problems as my grandmother also had a thyroid problem but nobody told me about it. Thank goodness for fertility docs that do proper testing! We are so grateful.
Keep us posted on how you go...
